Maintaining Laminate Barrier via Barrier Testing from Ultimet Films

Within this piece, we aim to address one aspect of process optimisation, namely ‘Maintaining Laminate Barrier’ and how Ultimet Films can assist its customers to achieve this by utilising our extensive testing service capabilities.

At Ultimet Films, we specialise in providing AlOx coated films for a wide range of applications, including food and medical packaging. Our Reactive Aluminium Oxide Deposition process deposits a 10nm inorganic barrier layer (Aluminium Oxide) onto one side of the film. This thin layer is fragile and requires converters to optimise their processes to ensure that the barrier layer is not damaged during printing or lamination. AlOx coated film is transparent, which makes identifying scratches/damage challenging versus a traditional silver/metallised film.

Our customers take great care to select a barrier film which achieves the desired OTR and MVTR requirements. However, not all converters optimise their production processes to ensure that the high barrier properties of the film are maintained throughout the various stages of production. It is commonly known that the most ‘torturous’ path of the film is during the print stage, but damage can also occur during the lamination phase also.

To this end, Ultimet Films offers its barrier testing services as an aid to converters. Customers are encouraged to send laminate samples to Ultimet Films laboratory for testing to ensure neither OTR or MVTR barrier properties have been compromised during print and/or lamination. This swift and inexpensive service ensures the converter and their customer have full confidence that their pack provides the utmost protection for the goods within.
